Asbestos was used in car brakes (actually there are still brakes that use asbestos for the lining), building plasters, cements, shingles, insulation and many more applications. It is thought this is what may be causing the rise in Mesothelioma reported cases. This is why many buildings that are older than 40 years old may contain asbestos and the demolition of such homes become very harmful to the environment and those exposed to the debris. The thought has been that many companies knew of the dangers of using asbestos but because of the cost savings and risk to benefit ratio many companies never pushed for further testing on the possible effects. in 1989 the EPA outlawed all uses and applications of asbestos but this was later over turned in 1991 to limits it’s use.You recieve harmful effects by inhaling or ingesting asbestos fiber so this is why some forms of asbestos are still used in brake linings and other applications.
